River Parks Townsville
Pacific Partnerships is exploring the potential to develop energy storage and a small-scale data storage facility in Kelso, in Townsville’s upper Ross area.
While still in the early development stages, the potential site for the proposed infrastructure is located on an undeveloped area to the west of Riverway Drive, between River Parks residential development and Powerlink’s existing Ross River substation.
Townsville's industrial base and skilled workforce make it well-placed to support construction and ongoing operation of the proposed development.
Indicative layout
There are two potential components within the proposed development area as follows.
Battery energy storage system
If it proceeds in the proposed development area, a battery energy storage system (BESS) would support a more reliable and resilient electricity supply for North Queensland.
The existing Powerlink Ross River substation is a critical connection point between North Queensland and the wider National Electricity Market. Co-locating a BESS adjacent to the substation means no new above ground high-voltage transmission lines, a smaller land footprint, and less disturbance during construction.
The 200 MW (4 hour) BESS would support reliable supply for the region, storing electricity when it is in surplus and despatching it back to the National Electricity Market (NEM) when electricity demand is high.
Small-scale data storage facility
We are exploring the inclusion of a small-scale data storage facility as part of the development, which would provide fast, local access to digital services, cloud platforms and communications networks
The facility would have a small footprint within the proposed development area, supporting local digital infrastructure needs and integrating with the broader BESS project.
Project Status / Contact Us
Pacific Partnerships is undertaking early engagement with neighbours and stakeholders including Townsville City Council, state and federal agencies to understand the feasibility of the proposed development.
A range of environmental and technical studies are proposed including ecology, traffic, noise, visual amenity, flood, bush fire, hazard and a social impact assessment to understand the proposed development from an impact perspective.
The proposed development will seek to deliver community benefits shaped through ongoing engagement with neighbours, stakeholders and the broader Townsville community.
