Leighton Contractors consortium reaches financial close on Australia’s biggest health PPP

The SA Health Partnership consortium led by Leighton Contractors today reached financial close on Australia’s largest health PPP.

The project is the largest and most advanced hospital project ever undertaken in Australia and the single largest infrastructure project in South Australia’s history – the $1.85bn new Royal Adelaide Hospital (nRAH).

The project is worth over $900 million to Leighton Contractors who will design and construct the new hospital in joint venture with Hansen Yuncken.

“We have an extremely experienced team of local and national partners who are leaders in the design and construction of some of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects,” said the Managing Director of Leighton Contractors, Craig Laslett.

In addition to being the largest social infrastructure project ever delivered in Australia, the new Royal Adelaide Hospital will be the country’s most advanced hospital.

“Our design team has developed a patient-centric hospital that will accommodate digitized record keeping and caters to the highest standard of patient care and services for their families,” said Mr Laslett.

“It will also be the first public hospital in Australia to provide all inpatients with a single room and ensuite, providing greater infection control, patient dignity and health outcomes.”

Technology will be at the forefront of service delivery for the project, which includes more operating theatres and procedural rooms, more intensive care beds and a significant increase in emergency care, thereby providing an overall 30 per cent increase in capacity for patients throughout the hospital.

Leighton Contractors is also an Equity Sponsor of the project through its Investment and Facility Management Division, which will invest $68.1m in the project. Leighton Contractors is one of five major private equity investors in the fully-underwritten project.

“Because Leighton Contractors is committed to the long-term success of the project, we have chosen to also invest in it,” said Peter Hicks, Executive General Manager, Investment and Facility Management at Leighton Contractors.

“We have been extremely successful in attracting investment in the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.”

“The strong support from both Australian and international investors indicates that the market will support good quality health infrastructure, like the new Royal Adelaide Hospital project.”

The nRAH will include:

  • 800 beds (700 multi-day beds and 100 same-day beds), with the rooms including opening windows, natural light and access to outdoor areas and green space
  • 40 technical suites (operating theatres)
  • a significant increase in emergency care facilities
  • Advanced technologies including patient weighing beds and intelligent information systems including wireless technology, equipment tracking capability, and bedside entertainment and meal ordering for patients.
  • An underground car park with over 2300 bays optimising accessibility for patients. staff and visitors
  • A commercial precinct providing extended hours amenity including restaurant, minimart, cafes, crèche, gymnasium, bank, post office and hairdresser.

Construction of the nRAH is expected to commence in the coming months and is scheduled for completion in 2016.

The new hospital will offer a comprehensive range of complex clinical care to patients, including adult medical and surgical services, emergency care, mental health, outpatient and community services, and diagnostic services.

It is being delivered as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) under the State Government's Partnerships SA model.
